Yoga has become incredibly popular in recent years, but did you know it is actually an ancient form of exercise?

ClearO2 and Yoga

Yoga has many health benefits. It focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The two main parts to yoga are the series of movements and postures that it comprises of and breathing. This is why ClearO2 is a perfect accompaniment to your yoga practice, it helps you to maximise the benefits of the breathing element.

Yoga also develops our balance, and there is evidence that it can be helpful in reducing blood pressure, for arthritis (where possible) and for general aches. From a mental health perspective, it has shown to be beneficial for people suffering depression and stress. This is another aspect that ties in perfectly with ClearO2 to further enhance the feelings of stress reduction and relaxation.

Yoga is suitable for all ages, including children, and all fitness levels. Many people start yoga in their seventies now to maintain balance, coordination and strength, which reduces the risk of falls. You also don’t need to be super-flexible, as it improves this as you practice.

So, where did yoga begin?

Yoga originated in India around 5000 years ago, though some people believe it may be even older, and has since been introduced to other countries in various ways. There are many different styles of yoga, so there will be something to suit you.

Its exact history is difficult to pinpoint because many of its original practices were taught verbally and its teachings were kept secretive. Very early scripts were written onto palm leaves, but over the years many of these got damaged or lost. The oldest texts discovered mentioning the word yoga were the Rig Veda, containing songs, mantras and rituals to be used by Brahmans (the supreme being of the Hindus).

Over the years it was refined and developed, with beliefs and practices being noted in many scriptures. It is a complex story, with the most renowned being the teachings of letting go of the ego, through self-knowledge, action and wisdom.

Many people who enjoy yoga today will not know its history as a spiritual Hindu discipline. But they do know it includes breathing, simple meditation and poses, and that it is used for relaxation and healthy living.

If you are a beginner, two sessions a week is a good start, with a beginner level programme, building up to the more difficult postures. It is also advisable to learn from a qualified instructor.

As part of a healthy lifestyle, it’s time to pop on some comfy clothes, grab a can of ClearO2 and your floor mat and enjoy!
